This weekend, The Los Angeles Times featured a story on the Right On Crime campaign. The article notes that although Democrats are involved in several prison reform efforts, “it is conservatives who have been working most conspicuously to square their new strategies with their philosophical beliefs — and sell them to followers long accustomed to a lock-’em-up message.” Professor Douglas Berman of Ohio State’s Moritz College of Law calls the Times article “terrific” in a blog post on his highly-regarded website, Sentencing Law and Policy. In his post, Prof. Berman also disagrees with cynics who think the conservative push for reform will be short-lived. Due to a couple of noteworthy factors, he thinks that conservative criminal justice reform is here to stay.
