Austin, TX—Recent comments by House Speaker Paul Ryan that he will schedule a vote on a criminal justice reform bill this year earned praise from Right on Crime, the leading conservative criminal justice reform organization:

“Speaker Ryan is showing courageous leadership on criminal justice reform, and we call on House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) to ensure there is floor time for the House to consider key reforms” said Jerry Madden, former Chairman of the Texas House of Representatives Corrections Committee and a signatory to the Right on Crime Statement of Principles. Congress has an opportunity to implement the reforms that have proven to enhance public safety while saving billions in tax dollars in the states.”

“It is exciting to see the Speaker follow the example of states such as Texas, Georgia, Utah, Mississippi and Alabama that have enacted criminal justice reforms that are producing positive results and can serve as a model for Congress to follow,” said Mr. Madden.
