Oklahoma lawmakers gathered for a hearing on the interim study on criminal justice reform at the state capitol, Tuesday, October 24th. The Chairman of the study, Rep. Terry O’Donnell (R-Tulsa), invited former Texas Rep. Jerry Madden and Right on Crime’s Policy Director Marc Levin to share their insight and success stories with members of the Judiciary – Criminal Justice & Corrections committee.
Chairman O’Donnell commended Right On Crime for being instrumental in helping provide expert testimony on the success of reforms in other states. As the former Chairman of Corrections in tough-on-crime Texas, Rep. Madden shared his acumen with a detailed account of the politics and processes of promoting criminal justice reform among conservative lawmakers.
Levin’s testimony presented deep policy analysis that highlighted the benefits of Oklahoma Gov. Fallin’s Task Force recommendations. He then shared best practices for laying the foundation for additional reforms.
While visiting Oklahoma, Rep. Madden was afforded the opportunity to promote the goals of the legislative study during a live interview on KOKC AM-1520 Radio with Right On Crime’s State Director for Oklahoma, Andrew Speno.
Before heading back to Texas, Rep. Madden and Levin met with lawmakers to outline practical policy goals for the 2018 legislative session. Right on Crime’s Manager of State Initiatives, Greg Glod, aided in providing conservative strategies for promoting policy, navigating the legislative process and overcoming political obstacles.
