Austin, TX — Today, Right on Crime published From Tax Burdens to Tax Payers Handbook for Employers which includes testimony from business owners and offers statistical analysis on why hiring previously incarcerated individuals benefits businesses, communities, and families across Louisiana.The fundamental intent of Right on Crime in providing this handbook is to assist employers in making informed decisions when considering individuals with criminal records for employment in their companies.
“With Louisiana’s growing workforce shortage, one possible solution is hiring individuals with criminal backgrounds,” said Right on Crime state director of Louisiana Elain Ellerbe. “Not only does a company benefit from skilled workers, but they are also helping improve public safety and helping families become economically stable.”
According to Louisiana Department of Corrections Secretary James Le Blanc, 94,000 children in the state have an incarcerated parent. Employers who extend second chances help these individuals provide for their children, and greatly reduces their likelihood of reoffending.
“Deciding to hire individuals recently released from prison is not always easy, which is why Right on Crime has published the From Tax Burdens to Tax Payers Handbook for Employers, to provide answers to employers’ questions about this unique population of potential employees,” said Ellerbe.
Right on Crime is a national campaign of the Texas Public Policy Foundation, in partnership with the American Conservative Union Foundation and Prison Fellowship that supports conservative solutions for reducing crime, restoring victims, reforming offenders, and lowering taxpayer costs. The movement was born in Texas in 2005, and in recent years, dozens of states such as Georgia, Ohio, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Louisiana, have led the way in implementing conservative criminal justice reforms.
