Oklahoma City, OK — A poll commissioned by Right on Crime and conducted by Ascend Perspectives revealed a majority of registered voters in four separate legislative districts in Oklahoma support criminal justice reforms and place significant importance on how their lawmakers vote on criminal justice reform legislation. The poll surveyed a number of criminal justice reforms. The poll surveyed a total of 1,118 registered voters in Oklahoma House District 39, Senate District 29, Senate District 41, and Senate District 47 in mid-March 2019.
Key findings of the poll include:
- A clear majority of Oklahomans across the four districts think we have too many people incarcerated right now. The only exception is SD-29, where only a plurality of 44% thought we should have fewer people in prison, although this number jumped to large majorities even in SD 29 after voters were informed that Oklahoma was the highest incarcertor by rate in the country.
- A vast majority in every district supported State Question 780 and the current legislative effort to retroactively extend the 2016 ballot measure to offenders how are already serving time.
- When voters were asked about how their support for their current lawmaker would be affected if he or she opposed or obstructed in any way passage of criminal justice reforms, they overwhelmingly moved two to one in favor of opposing their legislator in the following election.
