Dear Mr. President:

On the one-year anniversary of the signing of the First Step Act, we wish to congratulate you and thank you for your leadership on this crucial issue.  Right on Crime was pleased to work with you and a bipartisan coalition of Representatives and Senators to assist in passing this historic reform by informing the public, the media and Capitol Hill as to its similarity to successful measures at the state level.

Since the First Step Act was implemented, thousands of men and women have left prison behind and have started on the road to productive lives.  This law was designed to keep communities safe and to invite the formerly incarcerated to participate in the growing economy. Efforts to keep incarcerated parents close to their children have been a major success in keeping families together.  Home confinement for low-risk offenders and rehabilitation for substance abuse in prison is more widely available.

The ideas for prison reform that begin in states like Texas, South Carolina and Georgia have shown to be viable at the federal level, and they have attracted a broad coalition of supporters.

Thanks to the First Step Act, the future is brighter for many who have been previously overlooked.

Mr. President, we congratulate you on this achievement and we look forward to working with you to build on this success.

Right on Crime
