As May arrives it brings with it longer days, warmer weather, and signs of new life. It also brings an important opportunity to recognize the men and women whose service can go unseen. In our work it is easy, almost habitual, to focus on offenders, systems, and outcomes. But behind every safe street and every functioning courthouse are law enforcement professionals answering a difficult call every single day.

This month brings several important moments of recognition, including National Correctional Officers and Employees Week, National Police Week, and Peace Officers Memorial Day. These observances are more than just dates on a calendar; they are an opportunity to acknowledge the weight carried by those who serve in jails, prisons, and communities across the country.

Correctional officers, police officers, and all peace officers operate in environments defined by uncertainty and risk. Their work requires discipline, restraint, and judgment under pressure, often in situations where decisions must be made in seconds and consequences last a lifetime. They are tasked not only with enforcing the law, but with maintaining order in places where order is not guaranteed.

There is also the personal cost of their professions. Law enforcement officers and correctional staff regularly face long hours, high stress, and exposure to traumatic situations. Peace Officers Memorial Day serves as a solemn reminder of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others, and of the families who carry that loss forward.

As this month begins, we extend our gratitude to every officer who has chosen this line of duty. Public safety is not some abstract concept, but rather the result of real people showing up, often in difficult circumstances, to do necessary and demanding work. Their service deserves recognition not only in May, but all throughout the year.
