In January 2020, Debra Ross got the call every mother fears. Her son had been murdered and the court liaisons were overwhelmed with more than 120 murder cases in her Louisiana town. Debra wanted information that the criminal justice system wasn’t sharing.

Through a pandemic, therapy, and support from her family, church, and community, Debra says she and others found comfort in her faith. Her court liaison still reaches out periodically and hopes to get justice for Debra’s son.

Could the system do more? Debra says yes. All communities suffer the ripples of crime. And any criminal justice policy reform must consider victims’ rights.
